The Indian Institute of Management Tiruchirappalli organised its Fourteenth Convocation ceremony on 04 April 2026. The occasion marked not merely the conferment of degrees, but a defining moment in the journeys of its graduating cohort, one shaped by intellectual rigour, resilience, and a readiness to navigate an increasingly complex world.
A Ceremony of Continuity, Achievement, and Transition
The convocation ceremony was graced by Shri Vijay Sankar, Chairman of The Sanmar Group and Senior Vice President, FICCI, as the Chief Guest, and presided over by Shri Jalaj Dani, Chairman of the Board of Governors, IIM Tiruchirappalli, in the presence of Dr. Godwin Tennyson, Director (In-charge), IIM Tiruchirappalli.
Annual Report of the Institute presented by the Director (In-charge): Academic Progress and Institutional Growth
Presenting the annual report for the academic year 2025–26, Dr. Godwin Tennyson highlighted the Institute’s continued advancement across academic programmes, research, and institutional initiatives.
The Doctoral Programme in Management admitted 11 scholars during the year, alongside 9 participants in the Executive Doctoral Programme, with 3 scholars graduating at the convocation. Their work, presented at national and international conferences and published in reputed journals, reflects the Institute’s growing research footprint. The academic year also witnessed the organisation of 17 research seminars and a research workshop, strengthening the Institute’s research ecosystem.
At the postgraduate level, the Post Graduate Programme in Management (PGPM) has 407 students graduating this year. The curriculum was enriched through 69 elective courses and engagement with 66 industry experts, ensuring strong alignment with contemporary business practices. Academic excellence was recognised through merit awards for 15 students, while 18 students benefited from the Institute’s academic fee waiver scheme.
The Post Graduate Programme in Human Resources (PGPM HR) continued to deepen its domain focus through structured mentorship and industry engagement, with 50 students graduating. Similarly, the Post Graduate Programme in Business Management (PGPBM), designed for working professionals, maintained strong industry relevance through live projects and practitioner-led learning, with 50 graduates completing the programme.
Chairman’s Address on Leadership and the Evolving Nature of Decision-Making
Delivering his address, Shri Jalaj Dani, Chairman of the Board of Governors, reflected on the evolving nature of leadership in an increasingly uncertain and dynamic world. Framing his message around the realities of ambiguity and rapid change, he urged graduates to think beyond conventional markers of success and focus on the quality of their judgment in moments that truly matter.

He highlighted that uncertainty is no longer an exception, but a constant condition that future leaders must learn to navigate.
Emphasising the essence of decision-making, he noted that in both professional and personal contexts, individuals will ultimately be defined not by the resources they command, but by “the clarity of thought in the moment of decision.” He underscored that this ability, cultivated over time, becomes the most reliable anchor in times of ambiguity.
Reflecting on the role of the Institute in shaping this capability, he remarked that IIM Tiruchirappalli’s learning environment goes beyond imparting knowledge, focusing instead on building the capacity to think critically, adapt, and respond with perspective on “not what to think, but how to think.”
Chief Guest’s Address: On Choices, Character, and the Meaning of Success
In his convocation address, Shri Vijay Sankar shared reflections drawn from his personal and professional journey, offering graduates a perspective grounded in humility, responsibility, and self-awareness.
Acknowledging the role of family support, he began by expressing gratitude to parents, recognising the belief and encouragement that underpin each student’s journey. Reflecting on his own path, he noted that while individuals may begin with different advantages,“it is not the set of cards you are dealt with, but what you do with them” that ultimately defines one’s journey.
Emphasising the realities of professional life, he highlighted that failure and difficulty are inevitable, and that the way one responds to failure becomes a defining factor in long-term success. He encouraged graduates to view the early years of their careers as formative, where decisions made away from visibility shape future trajectories.
Drawing from his experiences, he outlined four guiding principles: persistence, positivity, preparation, and people as essential qualities that distinguish effective professionals. Through personal anecdotes, he underscored values of responsibility, resilience, and humanity, while also reminding graduates that meaningful impact often lies beyond recognition.
He further highlighted the importance of contributing to society, noting that the most significant work is often unseen, and encouraged graduates to find ways to give back meaningfully as they progress in their careers.

As the Fourteenth Convocation drew to a close, the ceremony stood as a reminder that education is not merely about achievement, but about responsibility. Each graduating student leaves not only with a degree, but with the ability to think critically, act ethically, and lead with purpose in an increasingly complex world.
